Biking Detail Booneville, Ky to Berea, KY |
Facts about Berea: Population 14,700
Hometown to Berea College. Was founded in 1855 and was the first inter-racial and co-educational college in the South. Berea charges no tuition and admits only academically promising students from Appalachia who have limited resources. The students work at least 10 hours per week in campus and service jobs. Also home to the famous Historic Boone Tavern Hotel and Restaurant of Berea College built in 1909.
We left Booneville about 8:00 am on our way to Berea. In less than 4 miles we were hit by two 12% climbs reminding us that we weren't in flat country yet. We had a total of 8 climbs which all seemed to pass 12% at some point. We had one small hill that hit 17% making it the steepest grade on the trip so far.
We were chased by several dogs again and Stephen stopped to get some squirt guns for protection. I had one dog chase me for a hundred yards or so and gave him a squirt of mace which stopped the attack. Chasing bikes is built into some dogs. They just like the sport of it. Like chasing a rabbit. It's so ingrained, that I even had a dog with a broken front leg in a cast hobble out and give me a chase. I felt so sorry for him I couldn't bring myself to squirt him with the mace. He finally gave up and limped away on his three legs and his cast.`
We arrived in Barea about 2 pm and are staying at the Historic Boone Tavern and Hotel. We had a nice dinner in Lexington at the Grey Goose Restaurant with good friends from our old Seattle days, Russ and Kathy Hoff. We also got in a quick visit with Angela and her family and David and his wife Erin. It was nice to catch up after many years away.

I say Moo every time I pass the cows. They like the attention. |

Let's see. Which gas tank should I use? |
