Day 14 Berea, KY to Harrodsburg, KY

Yorktown, VA to Harrodsburg, VA Completed 805 Miles

Biking Detail Barea, KY to Harrodsburg, KY
Day 14 Monday, May 25 (Memorial Day)

We left Berea at 8:15 am. Very windy! Had breakfast at the Boone Hotel restaurant, no instant oatmeal for me today. Berea actually had a coffee shop by the hotel so I had my first latte of the trip. Headed to Harrodsburg for hopefully another 49 mile day so I can have some computer time. Lost that last night by driving to Lexington, but well worth it. Today is the start of the Daniel Boone and bluegrass country. Will see blankets of honeysuckle and cattle ranches and ride through 45 miles of horse heaven. Lots of tall shaker style barns made of long boards. First 11 miles were very enjoyable with a slight tailwind for part of the ride. Then we hit two 12% grades, one with a 16% spike. Just reminders I keep telling myself. So far I have not pushed my bike uphill. The remainder of the ride consisted of rolling hills some of which you could attack and make it all the way up before heading down again. Others were just too long and you had to shift to "granny" to get to the top. They were 200 foot to 400 foot hills and they just kept coming.

Stopped at subway for lunch in Bryantsville. Only about 15 miles to Harrodsburg. Storm coming in with rain so good we are stopping there. Crossed Lake Herrington. Famous spot for bass fishing tournaments. Got to Harrodsburg about 2:30 pm and met up with Mary in the RV. Stephen and Mary felt it was best if they push on as they have friends to meet in Missouri. We sadly parted company but may still meet up with them along the way. We wished Stephen good riding and tailwinds and Mary success in navigating the RV. We will miss you as travel companions and appreciate all the effort that Stephen and Mary put into organizing the ride. We will stay in touch!

End of day farewell to Stephen and Mary. Local just wanted to talk.
