Biking Detail Grangeville, ID to New Meadows, ID |
Day 52 Thursday, July 2
Left Grangeville at 6:15 and started climb up White Bird Pass. Missed turn off to old HWY 95 so rode 95 to top and ended up staying on 95 for the downgrade. Nice shoulder and able to travel at 40 MPH which I wouldn't be able to do on the series of switch backs on the old hwy.
Stopped at the Espresso/ Gift shop at top of hill going into White Bird. Owner opened early to fix us a latte. Topped it off with huckleberry ice cream, an appetizer to breakfast which will be two hours down the HWY in Riggins. Not even 9:00 and very hot already....looking to be over 100 again today. Hwy along the Salmon River very scenic as it winds through the canyon.
Time zone changed back to Mountain time as we crossed the Salmon River
before we got to Riggins which we did not realize until we ordered breakfast there and learned it was 11:30 not 10:30 and they stop serving breakfast at 11:00. Seeing the surprise with the time and disappointment on our faces the owner agreed to make us breakfast.
The restaurant was Kate's Cattleman towards the west end of Main Street. Recommend as a place to stop. Good food and very friendly, accommodating owner. Left there to begin the afternoon climb to New Meadows, about 2,000 ft. Extremely hot!!!! Margie pulling over every mile or less to keep me hydrated with ice cold water! Couldn't carry enough water to climb in this kind of heat!!! Thank goodness for the SAG! At least I have a tailwind and road is newly paved with a good shoulder. Lots of trucks though!
Got to our stopping point in New Meadows at 4:15 Mtn time...3:15 based on morning Pacific coast time! Ready for the air conditioned motel room. Camping in this heat would be brutal!
