Biking Detail New Meadows, ID to Halfway, OR
Day 53 Friday, July 3

Left New Meadows at 6:20. So nice to ride when it is cool. Actually started with my windbreaker. Got to Council, 27 miles, in good time...nice little tail wind for a change! Continued on to Cambridge, at 49 miles, for breakfast to take advantage of the good biking conditions! Some of the best roads on the trail. Light traffic, new, fast asphalt and a tail wind, couldn't ask for more. The few uphills were fairly short with nothing greater than 6%. Stopped at Bucky's Cafe. Huge pancakes! Combined with eggs and hash browns could not eat it all. Definitely a pancake for two.

Turned NW on 71 towards Hells Canyon and lost both the good road and favorable wind!! This made the climb to the 4,131 pass not much fun...but scenery on way down pretty awesome! When you round the corner and see several hundred feet below the vast Brownlee Dam reservoir, formed by the Snake River, it is worthy of stopping for photos! Very scenic for several miles. Nice ride down as well!

Had hoped to stay near Oxbow but camping was the only option and way too hot. Ended up finding a motel room in Halfway, the Halfway Motel, so biked the extra 15 miles. Didn't realize it was another climb, about 800 feet! End of day with temp over 100...crazy hot and tired when pulled into the motel. Saw on the ACA map that Halfway has a great 4th celebration. Checked it out and decided to take a rest day tomorrow and be here for the festivities!

Here's where all the logging trucks are coming from

Nice view as the road climbs

Stopped at Bucky's in Cambridge

The BIG Pancake

We take Idaho 71, no more tail wind for the climb

Took two hours to make this 15 mile climb

Her's my favorite sign...it's downhill from here

This is a the lake formed by Brownlee Dam on the Snake River

Taking a water break and enjoying the view

Nice downhill to Brownlee Dam

Hills are pretty bare
