Biking Detail Everton, MO to Pittsburg, KS
Day 27 Sunday, June 7

Pleasant start to the day at the lodge. Held off on breakfast waiting for the much talked about Cooky's Cafe in Golden City (27 miles away). Hit the trail about 7:30. Lots of rolling hills on SR K leaving Everton. More wheat fields, farms and very picturesque Turnback Creek with a spillover. AC cyclists must have had an early start from Ash Grove as five of them already ahead of us when we got on the route. Ride not too bad at the beginning and made good time. Had a SSW wind in our face at 10mph but made pretty good time for the first 30 miles leaving the Ozarks behind finally. Got to Golden City few minutes before they stopped serving breakfast at 10:00. Pancake and eggs with gooseberry pie for dessert. They are noted for their pies so had to have a piece. So many to chose from!

Most of AC cyclists there as well, along with Ed and Andreas. The last four miles into Golden City were indeed golden in that we had a great tailwind. Not the case leaving Golden City on 32 mile straight stretch on HWY 126 to Pittsburg...strong side wind with a bit of in your face component, very hot and no relief! Grueling conditions. Combination of the wind, seeing endless road in front of you, and the heat made for pretty uncomfortable ride. There is nothing between the two towns!!! Right as we crossed the border into Kansas I had my first flat! Totally beat and needing to get out of the sun opted to change the flat at the motel. Used the SAG vehicle and Road the last couple of miles to do that. Ed and Andreas totally whipped. May need to consider our first rest day tomorrow. Will discuss over dinner tonight.
