Day 33 Saturday, June 13

Left Bazine at 7:00 am. Truly wonderful stay at Elaine's B&B. Dan and Elaine are such warm, gracious people to open their home as they do and to provide meals that we sit down with them to eat. Dan even watched the U.S. Women's World Cup Soccer match with us, first soccer game he has watched.

Day started out slow for me, legs felt heavy. The wind was mostly an unhelpful cross wind, giving me some resistance rather than help. Rt. 96 is a good road with decent shoulder. Passed through one county though, Lane, where the road was not maintained as well and barely a shoulder. Once out of that county the road turned good again!  Was hoping to find a coffee/donut shop in Dighton, mentioned in the Handlebar Guide to Bicycling the TransAm book, but long since closed. Was really looking forward to that stop about 30 miles into my ride. Had to settle for machine coffee and cookie at the Dighton gas station/mini mart.

Pushed on to Scott City where we had lunch at Tates, a new restaurant right off trail on Main St. Has only been open one month. Good food. Had my regular: cheeseburger, fries, Miller Lite, Lemonade, water and a bannana cream tower. Not much else close to trail.

Decided to book a room here at the Best Western. Few choices for next several miles. Needed good WiFi and guest laundry. Best Western always a good choice. I was not totally ready to stop biking for the day so biked on another ten miles to Modoc (not listed on most maps) then came back to Scott City by car. This will give me a little head start for the morning as we drive back to this spot! Advantage of having a SAG vehicle!!!

Once I got back and looked at my Garmin I figured out why my riding was a little out of sorts. From Bazine to Modoc there is a steady climb of 1,409 feet. When you're riding you just don't notice that the 1%, 2% and 3% inclines add up. The slight uphill combined with the slight in-your-face side wind was just enough to tire the legs out faster than normal.

The weather was improving but the winds were beginning to blow too
