Day 35 Eads, CO to Pueblo, CO

Yorktown, VA to Pueblo, CO Completed 2,205 miles

Biking Detail Eads, CO to Pueblo, CO

Day 35 Monday, June 15
Started riding at 7:30 am. As we were leaving Eads stopped to take photo at the halfway across America sign. I actually had us reaching it few miles before Eads. Looks like I have 48 bonus miles!
Ride out of Eads was good as far as no traffic and very scenic open high prairie. SR 96 still not a great road but will take the no traffic, peaceful nature of the ride over road comfort. See road photos. Glad to have Margie snapping the photos as my attention is mostly on the road to avoid the bad spots. Hit one hole that nearly created a spill...caught looking at something other than the road!
Got to Haswell then Arlington fairly quickly. Averaged 16.7 MPH for first 25 miles!  Beautiful yellow wild flowers for miles about 15 miles before Sugar City. Started seeing cattle again....first really since Kansas. Arrived in Sugar City at 11:30 and stopped at the Sugar City Cafe for a late breakfast. Awesome meal...recommend as a stop for cyclists. Closed Friday and Saturday so better stop in Ordway if traveling through on those days.

CO packing some heat today. After three days of overcast skies, the heat is a factor today. Fortunately lots of ice cold water provided every few miles by my awesome wife! Fifty five miles to put in after our meal in Sugar City. Started the slow climb. About 35 miles east of Pueblo the flat high plains gave way to rolling hillsides on the right and Rockies spotted off in the distance, even a snow capped peak. Good bye flatlands!

Arrived in Pueblo about 4:00 pm. Traffic coming into town crazy busy. That coupled with the heat and tired legs after 100 miles made me grateful we had a reservation at the Comfort Inn!

The official half way point, guess we have ridden 48 bonus miles

The high plains of Colorado

A working wind mill

Haswell (grain elevator) 5 miles away

Haswell up close

We've been going up

This is Haswell more like a ghost town

Don't think it's open

Slight downhill from Haswell for 20 miles

The bumpy road was not fun

No need to worry about neighbors

Thought we made a wrong turn

Lots of beautiful wild flowers

A field of wild sunflowers

Yeah! No more corn!

Margie in the sun flowers

What kind of rail cars are these?

Has seen better times

Stopped at the Sugar City Cafe (it was open), closed Friday and Saturday

Inside decor

Lynette, the owner, cook and Jean Jacket maker

My breakfast: eggs, sausage, hash browns, pancake, plus a slice of blueberry pie

Terrain changes after Sugar City

Would like this in our yard

A lot of vacant buildings
